Restaurant Allergen Compliance: How Digital Menus Help You Display Allergen Information

Food allergies affect over 250 million people worldwide, and for some, a single mistake can be life-threatening. From the FASTER Act in the USA to Natasha's Law in the UK, from the EU Food Information Regulation to Japan's Food Labelling Act - every major market requires restaurants to provide allergen information. Paper menus cannot keep up with these requirements across different regulatory frameworks. Digital menus can.

What the Law Requires

USA: FALCPA & FASTER Act

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (2004) requires clear labelling of the 8 major allergens. The FASTER Act (2021) added sesame as the 9th mandatory allergen. Restaurants must inform customers about allergen presence in all food items served.

UK: Natasha's Law (2021)

Named after Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who died from an allergic reaction to a sandwich in 2016, this law requires all food businesses to provide full ingredient lists with allergens emphasised on pre-packed for direct sale food. For restaurants serving non-prepacked food, allergen information must be available upon request and clearly communicated.

EU Food Information Regulation (FIR 1169/2011)

The EU regulation mandates that all food businesses must inform customers about the presence of any of the 14 major allergens. This information must be provided in writing and be easily accessible before the customer makes a purchase decision.

Japan & South Korea

Japan's Food Labelling Act mandates declaration of 8 specific allergens with 20 additional recommended allergens - totalling 28. South Korea requires labelling of 22 allergens including beef, chicken, pork, and stone fruits. Both countries have among the world's most comprehensive allergen regulations.

Non-compliance can result in fines, enforcement notices, and in serious cases, criminal prosecution. Beyond legal risk, an allergen incident can destroy a restaurant's reputation overnight.

Why Paper Menus Fail at Allergen Compliance

Difficult to Update

When a recipe changes or a supplier substitutes an ingredient, every printed menu becomes outdated and potentially dangerous. Reprinting menus is expensive and slow.

No Filtering Capability

A customer with a nut allergy has to read through the entire menu, checking each dish individually. Small print allergen codes (the "contains: 1, 3, 7" approach) are confusing and easy to miss.

Language Barriers

International tourists may not understand allergen information written in the local language. A Japanese tourist in London cannot read English allergen warnings, creating a serious safety gap.

Staff Dependency

With paper menus, staff must memorise allergen information or check with the kitchen for every enquiry. During busy service, mistakes happen - and with allergens, mistakes can be fatal.

How Digital Menus Solve Allergen Compliance

One-Tap Allergen Filtering

Customers select their allergens on their phone, and the menu instantly hides or flags dishes that contain those allergens. No reading through fine print, no guessing, no asking the waiter.

Always Up to Date

When you change a recipe or ingredient, update the allergen information once in the admin panel. Every customer sees the updated information immediately - no reprinting required.

Multi-Language Allergen Display

Digital menus can show allergen information in the customer's own language. A French tourist sees allergen warnings in French, a German tourist in German. This eliminates the language barrier entirely.

Visual Allergen Icons

Each allergen is displayed with a clear, recognisable icon next to the dish name. Customers can identify allergens at a glance without reading text - faster and more reliable than numbered codes.

Audit Trail

Digital systems create a record of what allergen information was available and when. If there is ever an incident, you have documentation showing you provided the required information.

How EnuMenu Handles Allergen Information

1

In the admin panel, you assign allergens to each menu item from the comprehensive global list - covering the Big 8, EU 14, Asian-specific, bee products, and regional allergens. This takes about 30 seconds per dish.

2

Customers scanning the QR code see allergen icons next to each dish. They can tap any icon to see the full allergen name.

3

The allergen filter lets customers select one or more allergens. The menu immediately updates to show only safe dishes, with flagged items clearly marked.

4

Allergen information is displayed in the customer's language automatically, using EnuMenu's multi-language support.

Allergen Compliance Best Practices

  • Keep allergen data current - update immediately when recipes or suppliers change
  • Train all staff on allergen awareness, even with a digital system in place
  • Include a note that customers with severe allergies should always inform staff
  • Review your allergen information regularly with your chef or kitchen manager
  • Use both the digital menu and verbal confirmation for customers with severe allergies

Make Allergen Compliance Simple

EnuMenu's allergen display feature is available on all plans, including the free plan. Add allergen information to your menu items and give your customers the confidence to order safely.
